The Rear Football Field in Lincoln, R.I., was selected the winner of the 2008 Friday Night Lights Contest, an annual contest sponsored by NorthEast-Eagle Electrical Distributors, Canton, Mass., and Sports Radio WEEI. As the winner, the Rear Field will be upgraded with a brand new, state-of-the-art sports lighting system.

Located on the campus of Lincoln High School, the Rear Field is used by the high school's football programs as well as many youth programs, including the town's football and cheerleading squads. The field's lack of lighting has meant that the high school could not host Friday night football games. That problem will end with the 2008 season.

The second annual Friday Night Lights Community Sweepstakes gave cities and towns throughout New England the chance to win a new, installed sports lighting system for a youth football field within their town.

More than 14 towns submitted entries, along with short essays describing why their town or city deserved to win. The eligible entries were posted online and the public was invited to vote. For every 100 votes for a particular field, that football field received one entry in the grand prize drawing, which took place on Dec. 1, 2008. The announcement that Rear Field had won was made live on the airwaves of WEEI.

“The town of Lincoln is thrilled with this award,” said Joanne McManus, the town's personnel director. “We are so proud that our town came together, voted, and were lucky enough to be chosen. Our sincerest ‘thank you’ to WEEI Sports Radio and Northeast Eagle.”

The system will be installed in 2009 and a special lighting ceremony will be held. For more information on the Friday Night Lights Contest and how a city or town can participate, visit www.newfridaynightlights.com.
