In response to an increasing demand for generator service personnel, Generac Power Systems, Eagle, Wis., is offering free technical training to qualified individuals. Students who successfully complete the company's new Generac University program will be certified as generator service technicians.

“This is an excellent opportunity for someone to get into the generator business,” says Mike Carr, Generac's manager of marketing communications. “We are offering an intensive, four-week course on generator sizing, installation, troubleshooting and repair. It's an effective way for qualified individuals to gain the basic knowledge necessary to begin a career as a generator service technician. Upon completion of the program, we will assist graduates in finding a position with a generator dealer, if they would like. It's essentially free vocational training, with a high likelihood of a job awaiting each graduate.”

Classes will be held at the company's Eagle, Wis., training center, a 6,000-square-foot facility that features a large classroom and a state-of-the-art service bay that is ideal for hands-on instruction. Adjacent to the training center is Generac's Eagle manufacturing facility, where QT Series and Gemini twin gensets are made.

“Having access to the factory will allow students to learn how generators are designed and built,” says Tom Wein, service training manager. “By observing the production process, they'll see first-hand how the engine, alternator and control system are integrated into a finished product. In the classroom, they'll learn the basics of electricity and how backup systems work, as well as how to select the best generator for a given application.”

Upon successful completion of the program (by written exam and hands-on evaluation), students will be certified by Generac as a Phase A service technician, capable of sizing, installing, troubleshooting and repairing backup power systems. After obtaining additional experience, students will be eligible for Phase B and Phase C (Master level) training.
