Omega Pacific Electrical Supply, a San Francisco-based distributor, won a 3-year recycling contract with the state of California. Omega Pacific got the contract after spearheading a movement to change the laws and regulations to allow a prepaid recycling program that streamlines the recycling of certain hazardous waste products.

A new universal waste rule passed by the state in February 2006 mandates the recycling of all mercury-containing lamps, among other products. Under the law, it is no longer legal to dispose of florescent lamps, ballasts and batteries in the trash.

Omega Pacific, in partnership with Veolia Environmental Services' Recyclepak program, will take back and properly dispose of lighting and electronic wastes, including florescent lamps, ballast, batteries, computer electronics and mercury-containing items.

“We pride ourselves in being a leader in the lamp and ballast industry,” says Todd Lewis, principal at Omega Pacific. “We at Omega Pacific, along with Veolia, are pleased to be providing this service to the State of California and making a positive difference in our environment.”

In coordination with Omega Pacific, Veoila's Recyclepak program recycles and mails supplies to and from a customer's facility. It processes all documentation, including certificates of recycling. This pre-paid recycling program ensures complete compliance with state and local disposal regulations, greatly reducing the risks associated with improper storage. The award-winning Recyclepak program is used by thousands of companies across the country for routine maintenance.

“Our relationship with Omega Pacific and the state of California furthers both companies' global commitment to sustainable development and to protecting public health and the environment,” says Philippe Martin, president and CEO of Veoila.
