Two Siemens companies have formed a limited liability company (LLC) to focus on maintaining explosive detection devices and systems installed in 438 commercial airports in the United States.

Atlanta-based Siemens Energy & Automation and Chicago-based Siemens Building Technologies have teamed up to form Siemens Maintenance Services LLC. The company is supporting the $1.37 billion contract awarded last spring by the U.S. Department of Transportation to a Boeing/Siemens partnership to install and maintain explosive detection systems at commercial airports nationwide.

Legislation enacted by Congress in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks mandated the installation of detection systems in all commercial airports by Dec. 31, 2002. Siemens successfully met the installation challenge and will continue to manage field service.

Siemens Maintenance Services is based in the Dallas suburb of Richardson, Texas. Dave Patterson, formerly with Siemens Energy & Automation, was named general manager.
