KLM UK Engineering Limited, an aircraft maintenance repair organization at Norwich Airport in the United Kingdom, turned to online-based lighting management for lighting in a new hangar. The use of its new Nedap Luxon connected LED lighting system will bring energy savings in line with the company's sustainability goals.

The Luxon light management platform produced by Netherlands-based lighting management company Nedap is an online system that controls a building’s lighting regardless of the brand of luminaires involved and in the process gathers useable data to help clients manage their lighting energy use more efficiently.

At KLM UK Engineering Limited, Peter Mahoney, finance director, saw the value of better control of the facility’s lighting.

“Luxon gives us complete control over our lighting,” Mahoney said in a Nedap release. “It offers the flexibility to easily tailor the lighting to various activities in the hangars. For example, if there is only one aircraft in a hangar, we are able to dim the other bay. Nedap's Luxon platform ensures that our people can work even more efficiently and safely."

KLM’s facilities include five fully equipped modern heavy maintenance bays across three hangars, including an extensive on-site workshop, paint shop and trim bay. Over its more than 40 years of operation the facility has worked on many aircraft types, mostly in the regional jet and narrow body aircraft categories, including Embraer 170/190, Boeing 737 All Series, Airbus A320 Family, BAe 146 & Avro RJ and Fokker 70/100 types.

Nedap said its light management platform reduces energy consumption of LED by half at the KLM facility. "Lighting may not be the first thing you think of in terms of sustainability goals, but using the right system can actually have a big impact,” Mahoney added. “Using this intelligent system can result in significant energy savings, now and in the future, which also gives us a significant financial benefit."
