2014 New England Region Forecast

Nov. 7, 2013
New England is growing nicely, led by commercial construction in the Boston market. Construction employment growth at 16% is second only to Los Angeles. Overall, the region's electrical sales should grow 6.5% in 2014.
New England is enjoying a nice recovery from the economic doldrums, and as usual it’s been led by the Boston metropolitan area, which Moody’s says has “the strongest commercial real estate market in the country since the 2008 recession.” In the past few years, the city has enjoyed a major redevelopment of its waterfront, the opening of thousands of square feet of new office and retail space and billions of dollars in construction spending.
Boston's Millenium Tower project is just one of many boosting that metro area's construction work.

But the good times look like they will keep on rolling as construction companies added 8,700 new employees from Aug. 2012- Aug. 2013, a 16% increase that’s second only to Los Angeles. Some of these contractors may be working on the site of the new $630 million Millennium Tower at the site of the old Filene’s store, or at the $1.2 billon Suffolk Down racetrack-casino that’s on the drawing boards. Outside the Boston metro there are some impressive projects, too. Stamford, Conn., broke ground on a new $450 million hospital, and the recently started Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Research is a $191 million project in Farmington, Conn.
