LEDs Improve Convention Center’s Light Quality and Save Energy and Maintenance Costs

Jan. 29, 2014
New system expected to cut annual costs by over $200,000.

The Albuquerque Convention Center, a multi-purpose event complex with more than 270,000 sq. ft. of meeting and exhibit space, recently underwent a major lighting retrofit. The center’s East Complex received energy efficient LED lighting systems that have reduced annual lighting energy usage to just 7.6% of its total energy usage, down from 40%

The new LED lighting system, which used LED architectural troffers, linear luminaires and architectural downlights from Cree, controlled by a Lutron EcoSystem control system, was designed to improve the facility and provide better illumination for visitors. The new installation is also expected to deliver more than $120,000 in yearly maintenance savings and a reduction of more than $100,000 in annual energy costs, adding up to a rapid payback for the Convention Center.

“As a multi-purpose facility, high-quality LED lighting can truly enhance meeting and event spaces, making the Convention Center more attractive to tourists while lowering electricity use and maintenance costs,” said Tony Gurule, energy and sustainability program manager for the City of Albuquerque. “We conducted a study of various LED lighting manufacturers, and Cree and Lutron, with complementary lighting and controls, offered the ideal solution for us.”
