It’s no surprise that the Boston metro is driving New England’s construction market right now. With low vacancy rates downtown (10.8%) in 2Q 2012, big-time redevelopment along its historic wharves and sizeable biotech projects underway across the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass., the Hub City is showing some solid post-recession growth. McGraw-Hill Construction says Novartis’ $196.1 million R&D expansion project and Biogen’s $112.5 million project s in Cambridge, Mass., and a $126.6 million, 120-unit residential tower in Boston top the 2012 project list. Further west down the Mass. Pike, Penn National Gaming Inc. has announced plans to build an $800 million casino resort along 13 acres in Springfield, Mass. According to a report at www.worldconstructionnetwork.com, the proposed project will include would feature 3,000-3,500 slot machines, 80-100 live table games, a 20-30 table poker room and a 300-500 guestroom hotel with a spa.
