2016 New England Region Forecast

Nov. 30, 2015
Most of the region's activity in 2016 will again be in Boston, which is getting a boost from biotech, computer and finance growth. Contractor employment is up 10% and multi-family starts are up 35%. Offshore wind farms in Maine and Rhode Island lead the list outside the Boston area.
Fueled by the growth of its computer, biotech and financial industries, and facility spending by some of its largest universities, Boston is enjoying a construction renaissance that is by some measures the most building the Hub City has seen in decades. Two key construction metrics are particularly impressive — contractor employment is up 10% year-to-date, and  multi-family starts are up 35% at 6,247.  Along with all of the office buildings and condo towers under construction or planned, the rest of New England is enjoying a diverse mix of business. Most of Boston’s suburbs are also seeing double-digit growth in construction; wind farms are under construction in Maine and Rhode Island; Connecticut is enjoying some university and medical construction and a $750 million mixed-used development in Bridgeport; and Rhode Island has a $700 million gas-fired power plant on the drawing boards in Burrillville.
