Gexpro Helps the Exchange Cut Energy Consumption

The Exchange, an organization that provides merchandise and services to authorized military personnel, announced it has reduced energy usage at a pilot site in Texas by 45%. Formerly known as The Army & Air Force Exchange Service, The Exchange was able to achieve such results through a new energy efficiency upgrade program that included retrofitting the facility's existing refrigerated product displays, upgrading indoor and outdoor lighting and making HVAC system improvements.

By teaming up with NRG Vision and electrical distributor Gexpro, Shelton, Conn., the Exchange implemented a comprehensive energy retrofit at the pilot facility. The refrigeration case retrofits included replacing the existing motors, lighting and controls with new energy efficient motors, LED light bars, and smart controllers. The existing retail floor lighting was replaced with longer life, more energy-efficient lamps, ballasts and reflectors. Non-retail areas also maximized lighting system savings through energy efficiency technologies.

NRG Vision was awarded an IDIQ contract in late 2011 through a competitive sourcing request from The Exchange. Similar energy efficiency upgrade projects are planned for implementation at multiple Exchange convenience retail locations throughout the continental United States through 2013.
