An abstract lighting fixture inspired by broken glass and made of recyclable materials took first prize in Luraline Lighting's seventh annual “It's Your Light” student design competition.
University of Oklahoma interior design student Marissa Gomez, 21, received a $1,500 prize for her winning concept, which was chosen from among hundreds of entries received from design and architecture students at schools and universities across the country.
Gomez's “Prism Light” features irregular shapes and sharp angles reminiscent of shards of glass that have been put back together. Contrary to its appearance, the light fixture is composed of a single piece of recyclable acrylic, which was heated and then folded into its unique form. A seven-color LED lamp continuously changes the colors of light emitted by the fixture, providing low-level ambient lighting and further enhancing its visual effects.
The competition theme, which changes annually, focused on “Lighting of the Future” and attracted the largest participation in the contest's seven-year history.
“The new and fresh ideas presented by students such as Marissa Gomez and the many others that took part this year show that they have what it takes to become the designers of the future,” says Kurt Mandelik, vice president of Luraline Lighting. “In addition to lots of intriguing new designs, we were also impressed by the number of students who took care to specify recyclable materials, and by those who explored the multitude of possibilities and applications for LED light sources.”
Luraline will issue the Call for Entries for this year's competition this month, with the theme of “High-Performance Lighting.”
“We are looking for environmentally friendly lighting that goes beyond energy-efficiency,” Luraline Lighting President Howard Levine says. “True high-performance luminaires provide a complete lighting solution by maximizing the levels of usable light and minimizing waste through methods such as optics, controls and cut-off features, among others.”
