Cooper buys Lumiere

Cooper Industries, Houston, bought Lumiere Design and Manufacturing, Inc., Westlake Village, Calif., to join its Elk Grove Village-based Cooper Lighting

Cooper Industries, Houston, bought Lumiere Design and Manufacturing, Inc., Westlake Village, Calif., to join its Elk Grove Village-based Cooper Lighting subsidiary. The acquisition builds on Cooper Lighting's specification-grade lighting products, giving the company an outdoor offering.

Lumiere, which had sales of about $7 million in 1997, makes architectural landscape and specialty lighting products. The company's specialty is outdoor lighting for commercial, residential and industrial settings.

The products will make "an excellent complement to our specification-grade residential and commercial indoor lighting," says H. John Riley Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cooper Industries. "With this addition, our lighting customers will be able to specify Cooper products for entire projects, including indoor and outdoor applications."

That was true even before e-commerce, LED lighting and distributed generation began to disrupt so many of the electrical industry’s traditional practices.

Doug earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Kansas after spending a few years in KU’s William Allen White School of Journalism, then deciding he absolutely did not want to be a journalist. In the company of his wife, two kids, two dogs and two cats, he spends a lot of time in the garden and the kitchen – growing food, cooking, brewing beer – and helping to run the family coffee shop.
