2015 New England Region Forecast

Nov. 12, 2014
As in past years, most of the region's activity in 2015 will be in Boston, which is enjoying low commercial vacancy rates and a ton of hiring by technology firms. The Boston-Cambridge-Quincy metro area logged almost 8,000 building permits by August this year. Offshore wind farms lead the list of billion-dollar projects outside the Boston area.

It’s never a surprise when the Boston area sees most of the action in this region, and that’s once again the case, as the city is enjoying low office vacancy rates in its financial district and a ton of tech hiring by firms within the 495 Beltway. According to CBRE Research data, the Boston metro added 13,185 new tech jobs (49.6% of all new office jobs in the area) from 2011-2013. MIT plans to build a $350 million nanotechnology research center, and a $1.6 billion Wynn Resorts casino project in Everett, Mass., is on the drawing boards. The Boston-Cambridge-Quincy MSA logged almost 8,000 building permits through August, but year-over-year residential construction is off compared to 2013.

Other projects of note in New England include the Deepwater Wind project off coast of Rhode Island scheduled for construction in 2015; the $2.5 billion Cape Wind project that calls for 130 wind turbines; and the new $150 million Bone and Joint Institute that recently broke ground at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut.
