2015 East North Central Region Forecast

Nov. 18, 2014
Plenty of large projects are underway or on the drawing boards. Transportation figures prominently with a new rail line between Chicago and the Quad Cities. Even Detroit may be getting busy, with a new Red Wings arena proposed for downtown.

In a market area that doesn’t always have much prime-time economic news to brag about, plenty of large projects are now underway or under discussion. McGraw-Hill Construction recently reported on the start of a $250 million Chicago office tower and the $240 million renovation of a train and bus terminal in the Windy City, and Illinois’ Daily Herald says the state’s Department of Transportation has started work on a $255 million rail line between Chicago and the Quad Cities. Commercial Property Executive also recently reported on the $300 million IMD Gateway Center, a mixed-use project. In Indiana, the electric utility NIPSCO broke ground on a $1.1 billion electric modernization job and the University Notre Dame started working on its $400 million Campus Crossroads project. Detroit has a dream downtown project on the drawing boards in Olympia Development’s proposed $650 million Red Wings arena project, and eastern Ohio is enjoying growth related to oil and natural gas extraction in the Marcellus Shale region.
