2016 West North Central Region Forecast

Nov. 30, 2015
The decline of oil prices has slowed the boom in the Bakken Region's oil patch, but there’s a much more diverse mix of projects today. A new $2 billion fertilizer plant in Sioux City, Iowa, and the giant National Bio- and Agro-Defense facility in Manhattan, Kan., are highlights of strong growth outside of oil. With estimated growth of 6.5% in 2016 this is the hottest overall growth region in the nation.

Not all that long ago, the big news in this region was the once-in-a-lifetime oil & gas bonanza that transformed North Dakota’s Bakken region. There’s a much more diverse mix of projects today, from some medium-size hospital, warehouse and college construction in Omaha, Neb., and St. Louis, to CF Industries’ $2 billion fertilizer plant in Sioux City, Iowa and the giant National Bio and Agro-Defense facility in Manhattan, Kan., with a contract value reported to be somewhere between $705 million to $1.25 billion. More wind farms are underway in Iowa and North Dakota, including a Xcel Energy’s 100-turbine wind farm that recently broke ground in Courtenay, N.D.; the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is looking at a massive expansion; and plans were announced earlier this year for a $500 million expansion of Minnesota’s Mall of America.
