Chicago's loss of its Olympics bid and the construction boom it might have sparked is the least of this region's worries. MSAs throughout Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan have double-digit unemployment rates, led by Detroit (17.3%); Flint, Mich. (16.7%); and Rockford, Ill. (14.9%). Michigan's unemployment rate of 15.2 percent leads all states. A towering example of the credit crisis is the gaping hole at the construction site of the Chicago Spire, which at 150 stories would have been the tallest building in North America. Office vacancy rates offer little reason to cheer, with Cleveland (21.5%), Milwaukee (21.7%) and Detroit (29.3%) over the national average. Still, several large projects are underway. Chicago has two large condo towers being built; Indianapolis has the $350 million Parkview Health Center project; and there is a $1 billion uranium enrichment plant under construction in Piketown, Ohio.
