The Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize competition (also called the “L Prize Competition”) recently announced by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will offer lighting manufacturers up to $20 million in cash prizes for the development of solid-state lighting products to replace the common light bulb.

The competition will award cash prizes and may also lead to opportunities for federal purchasing agreements, utility programs and other incentives for winning products. The L Prize Competition was established by the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007. The legislation challenges industry to develop replacement technologies for today’s most widely used and inefficient products, 60W incandescent lamps and PAR 38 halogen lamps.

In a related DOE announcement, four California utilities -- Pacific Gas & Electric, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison -- have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DOE, agreeing to work cooperatively to promote high-efficiency solid-state lighting technologies. These utilities provided input to the competition planning process and will offer incentives and promotions to stimulate additional sales for the award-winning products.
