At the start of the peak hurricane season, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters suggested that the Gulf of Mexico, the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea could see nine to 12 tropical storms, with two to four of those becoming major hurricanes by the season's end November 30.
