The Home Depot, Atlanta, has a pilot program underway with PayPal that allows retail shoppers to pay for products using their PayPal accounts as an alternative to cash or cards. PayPal, the e-commerce payment system owned by eBay, will be available in more than 2,000 Home Depot stores by March.

PayPal began a trial in late January at 51 of Home Depot's home centers, primarily in the San Francisco area. In its move into the physical world, PayPal is raising a challenge to credit-card behemoths Visa and MasterCard. The in-store service lets consumers pay for their purchases with a PayPal card or with a phone number and pass code. PayPal is expanding its trials to 20 more retailers by the end of this year, according to a Bloomberg report.
