Historically, this region has some of the nation’s fastest-growing housing markets in Denver, Las Vegas and Phoenix, but this year none of these cities logged building permit at a pace much over the national average of +24% for single-family, 19% multi-family or +22% total construction. However, on the strength of its 79% increase in multi-family building permit activity, Salt Lake City is tracking at a +40% pace for the year. Outside of the new State Farm office complex in Tempe, Ariz., and two new casino projects in Las Vegas, the region's other large projects were in outlying areas.
In a typical year, construction activity this region’s three largest cities – Denver, Las Vegas and Phoenix – usually dominates the economic headlines, but in 2013 the projects are more spread more evenly through the region. Outside of the new State Farm 1.9 million-sq.-ft. office complex in Tempe, Ariz., and two new casino projects that started up this year in Las Vegas (the $415 million renovation of the SLS Hotel & Casino and the $165 million renovation of the Gansevoort Las Vegas Hotel & Casino), the region’s other large projects were in outlying areas. These projects were the 50MW Macho Solar Springs project broke ground in Deming, N.M., and the Casper Crude to Rail Terminal in Casper, Wyo. McGraw-Hill Construction reported that Charles Schwab broke ground this year on a $110 million headquarters in the Denver suburb of Lone Tree, Colo.
