2016 East North Central Region Forecast

Nov. 30, 2015
This region will be one of the strongest in the nation for electrical sales in 2016, trailing only its neighboring West North Central in percentage growth. Mass transit and multi-family construction in Chicago is backed by auto plant retrofits in Michigan and Indiana. Amazon has plans for a billion-dollar data center in Ohio.

A mix of mass transit projects and multi-family construction on the streets of Chicago, a surprising number of auto plant retrofits in Michigan and Indiana and several large power plants in Ohio are a big part of the economic story in this region. There are some trophy jobs underway, too, including the $450 million new home for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings hockey team; the ongoing $1.6 billion construction projects on the University of Michigan campus; and Amazon’s plans for a billion-dollar data center in Delaware County, Ohio. While Chicago doesn’t seem to be seeing quite as many big-ticket condo towers as some of the largest cities on the coasts, more than $600 million in mass transit projects are on tap and CMD says some big commercial projects are in the pipeline, including a big U.S. Post Office renovation and a project on the former site of U.S. Steel’s Southworks steel plant that would include 13,575 residences, 17,500,000-sq-ft of retail space.
