Viking Electric Recruits 70 Women to Build Habitat for Humanity Homes in Chicago
Seventy women in the electrical industry came together to build homes in Chicago's West Pullman neighborhood on Oct. 16. The event, organized by Viking Electric/Sonepar, and the company's two Sunrise Electric locations in Chicago, is a part of Habitat for Humanity's Women Build initiative.
The team of women contractors, manufacturers and distribution managers from across the electrical industry spent the day flooring, drywalling and painting four townhomes. The homes will go to four first-time women homeowners. "It is just the coolest thing to be able to bring women together like this to do something so meaningful," said Laura Scott, a sales specialist with Sunrise Electric, who has organized the electrical distributor's participation in the event for the past three years and helps build the homes herself. "The homeowners are such a bright light. They're always so grateful, it's overwhelming."
In addition to helping build the home, Viking Electric's Women Build team also raised more than $29,000 for the home's downpayment, helping the future homeowners secure a sustainable mortgage. Sonepar has participated in other Women Build events across the country, including builds in Seminole County, FL; Charleston, SC; and Baltimore, MD; in 2025 and 2026.
Viking Electric has 23 locations in the Upper Midwest. The company was founded in 1964 in St. Paul, MN, and serves residential and commercial electrical contractors, industrial, tool and related markets. The company stocks more than 30,000 products from 400 manufacturers.
