Strategy for the North American Distribution Market : HD Hyundai Electric

From UL Certification to Smart Manufacturing: HD Hyundai Electric’s
Strategy for the North American Distribution Market

  • UL certification strengthens HD Hyundai Electric's North American market foundation
  • Cheongju Power Distribution Campus enhances manufacturing quality and delivery competitiveness
  • HD Hyundai Electric targets annual production capacity of 13 million Low/Medium Voltage circuit breakers by 2030.

As data center construction accelerates across the United States, investment in power infrastructure is expanding in parallel as AI growth, industrial electrification, and manufacturing reshoring drive electricity demand.

However, expanding generation and transmission infrastructure alone is not enough. Growing demand for reliable power delivery is driving rapid adoption of low- and medium-voltage circuit breakers across substations, industrial facilities, data centers, and commercial buildings in North America.

Customer standards are also becoming increasingly stringent. Beyond quality and safety certifications, stable production and on-time delivery have become decisive factors, especially for data center projects built on compressed timelines.

In response, HD Hyundai Electric is accelerating its push into the North American distribution market. Leveraging nearly 50 years of expertise in power distribution equipment, the company is expanding its UL-certified portfolio and strengthening supply capabilities through the newly established Cheongju Power Distribution Campus.

Building on this foundation, HD Hyundai Electric is expanding direct supplies to hyperscale data centers in North America. Most recently, the company secured approximately USD 720 million power equipment supply contract with a global Big Tech company. Distribution equipment accounts for half of the contract value, further strengthening the company's competitiveness and market position in the North American distribution market.

Five Decades of Expertise in Distribution Equipment

HD Hyundai Electric’s distribution business began in earnest with the completion of its switchgear plant in 1978, followed by its Low/Medium Voltage circuit breaker plant in 1983. Since then, the company has supplied distribution equipment to a wide range of industrial customers in Korea and overseas, building more than five decades of expertise in design, manufacturing, and quality management.

Notably, since the early 2010s, the company has supplied medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) compliant with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards to major U.S. utilities and public institutions. This track record of quality and reliability in North America serves as the foundation for HD Hyundai Electric’s full-scale expansion.

Meeting North American Standards: Establishing the UL Certification Framework

UL certification is the first gateway to the North American market. As a leading certification system for product safety and performance, it is a de facto requirement for most major projects, including data centers, industrial plants, and commercial buildings.

HD Hyundai Electric has recently established a UL certification framework for its primary Low/Medium Voltage circuit breaker lineups, covering a wide voltage range from 277V to 38kV. By securing certifications across core product categories—including molded case circuit breakers, magnetic contactors, air circuit breakers, and vacuum circuit breakers—the company has built a foundation to meet the diverse requirements of customers.

This allows the company to extend its reach beyond traditional industrial and commercial sectors into the high-growth data center market. It also offers customers the advantage of sourcing a broader product portfolio from a single supplier.

Yet in today’s North American market, certification alone is no longer enough to secure a competitive edge. As project scales expand and procurement timelines shorten, the ability to manufacture reliably and deliver on time has emerged as a new frontier of competitiveness.

Cheongju Power Distribution Campus: Completing the Supply Competitiveness Equation

HD Hyundai Electric’s Cheongju Power Distribution Campus, completed at the end of 2025, is a key manufacturing base designed to meet these evolving market demands.

Spanning 85,000 square meters, the campus is a smart manufacturing platform that integrates the entire process—from customer orders and material procurement to manufacturing, quality management, and shipping—through data-driven systems. Designed to produce approximately 50,000 types of Low/Medium Voltage circuit breakers, it enables the company to respond flexibly to customer-specific requirements and market changes.

To strengthen quality competitiveness, core testing and inspection processes have been automated. By deploying automated systems for critical verification processes, including high-voltage testing and visual inspections, the facility minimizes quality variation and human error, improving product reliability.

The company has also improved operational efficiency and supply stability through autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and a warehouse management system (WMS) that optimize logistics from receiving to dispatch. Its integrated “Single Plan” system, which aligns sales and production planning, and its AI-driven demand forecasting system enable the company to respond swiftly to market fluctuations.

Through these efforts, HD Hyundai Electric is minimizing project lead-time volatility and securing reliable supply capacity for large-scale customers.

The Cheongju Power Distribution Campus is on track to establish an annual production capacity of 13 million Low/Medium Voltage circuit breakers by 2030. Looking ahead, the company is considering expanding its manufacturing capabilities to include switchgear and distribution transformers, evolving it into an integrated production hub for the broader power distribution sector.

Expanding Partnerships and Accelerating Market Penetration in North America

Building on its product competitiveness and manufacturing capabilities, HD Hyundai Electric is expanding customer touchpoints across North America.

The company has built partnerships with U.S. switchgear manufacturers, including SABRE, Golden Anvil, and EPEC, expanding its supply of Low/Medium Voltage circuit breakers and technical support. It is also strengthening local distribution networks and execution capabilities for data center projects.

In May, HD Hyundai Electric invited major distribution partners from across the Americas, including Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, to South Korea for a tour of the Cheongju Power Distribution Campus. Attendees observed the entire operational flow firsthand, from product development and production to quality management and shipment, gaining a direct understanding of the company’s manufacturing capabilities and supply stability.

The AI- and automation-based smart manufacturing systems, advanced quality management framework, and project response processes drew significant interest from partners, reinforcing their confidence in the company’s supply reliability and long-term partnership potential.

HD Hyundai Electric is also expanding its distribution business through local sales networks in 12 countries and the brand recognition it has established in the U.S. high-voltage equipment market. In the United States, the company is strengthening customer support through its sales subsidiary in Atlanta, while expanding exhibition marketing and technical support activities to further strengthen its foundation for market entry. Based on these efforts, HD Hyundai Electric is also accelerating the expansion of licensing and Brand Label (BL) supply.

The North American distribution market is no longer simply a market for selling products. It has evolved into a market that comprehensively evaluates suppliers based on quality, supply stability, and project execution capabilities.

With 50 years of distribution equipment expertise, a UL-certified product portfolio, and the smart manufacturing capabilities of the Cheongju Power Distribution Campus, HD Hyundai Electric aims to provide more reliable power solutions to customers across North America.
